Enfotec is one of the world's leading specialists in ice navigation.  We have been in the business of providing navigation support to ships operating in ice infested waters for twenty years.  Whether your needs include real-time day-to-day support or are considering a future project development that involves ship navigation in ice, Enfotec is at your service.

Mission Statement:

The Company shall be regarded as a worldwide supplier of high quality and reliable ice navigation information.

Who We Are:

Enfotec Technical Services is a Canadian company specializing in the provision of ice navigation support services to shipping companies, resource developers and government agencies worldwide.  Enfotec is a subsidiary of Fednav Limited of Montreal , Canada 's largest ocean-going ship owning and chartering group.  Enfotec was created from the Research and Development Group of Canarctic Shipping, a Division of Fednav Limited, in 1996.  The Company encompasses twenty years of experience in the field of ice navigation technology development having worked on all of the pioneering breakthroughs in ice navigation technology development on the M.V. Arctic, the world's highest ice class commercial cargo vessel.

The core of the Company's business is our IceNav shipboard ice navigation service.  IceNav is a computer-based ice navigation system installed on the bridge of a vessel operating in ice infested waters.  Clients of our IceNav service are provided with daily near-real-time satellite images, charts and forecasts of ice conditions in the region of operation of the vessel.  IceNav operates on a worldwide basis covering all of the major shipping channels covered by ice.  We provide daily support to vessels operating in the ice infested waters of the Canadian and American Arctic (including the Arctic Islands , Beaufort Sea , the North Slope of Alaska and the Chukchi Sea ), Greenland , the Canadian East Coast and the Great Lakes in winter.  We also have supported marine operations along the Northern Sea Route and the Sakhalin Island regions of Russia .  We are the only company in the world providing a comprehensive ice navigation service to all regions in the Antarctic.

Through the many years of ice navigation support operations, we have built up a significant database of ice information and technology to help our clients deal with navigation through ice covered waters, whether it be for present day operations or planning for future developments.  We offer a comprehensive service to assist our clients with shipping feasibility studies as well as environmental impact assessments.  All of the shipping from the base metal mines operating north of 600N in Canada utilize Enfotec's IceNav service and have used our consultancy and environmental impact assessment services to establish or expand their operations.  Ice should not be seen as a barrier but, rather, as an obstacle to overcome.  Enfotec has the knowledge and experience to help you overcome this obstacle to assist you in your present and future operations in ice.  Enfotec is an ISO 9002 registered company insuring our clients of the highest quality in service delivery and support.

IceNav was designed by navigating officers for use by navigating officers.

 Project Development

An important business activity of Enfotec is providing consulting services to marine and resource companies as well as government agencies on ship navigation in ice.  We have completed numerous shipping feasibility studies for mining and oil companies interested in exploiting mineral reserves in Newfoundland , northern Quebec , Nunavut , North West Territories , Alaska , Greenland and Russia . Our consultant services include:

·        Historical analysis of ice distribution leading to any location on earth

·        Analysis of ship accessibility to a given region based on available vessel ice class

·        Shipping in ice feasibility definition and marine logistics planning in ice

·        Canadian Arctic Shipping Pollution Prevention Regulation compliance assistance (including application of the Arctic Ice Regime Shipping System - AIRSS - implementation).  Assistance with the new IMO/IACS Polar Guidelines.

·        Ice property field data collection (such as thickness, topography, temperature, salinity and strength profiling)

·        Shipboard ice and wildlife observation data collection

·        Expert witness support for ice related insurance claims or support.

In addition, our systems development expertise can be applied to new software developments to support environmental information collection and analysis required for new projects.  For example, Enfotec has a comprehensive collection of Russian ice data in the INTARIS database, a GIS based system useful for the planning and operation of resource developments in Russia .

Environmental Assessment and Review Process (EARP)

Enfotec has built up a unique level of experience relating to the impact of shipping operations through ice covered waters on the marine environment.  We have used this experience to lead the preparations of the environmental impact statements (EIS) for the marine component of several major Arctic developments since the 1980's.  These developments include the marine component of the EISs prepared for the Panarctic Oils Bent Horn crude oil operation, regulatory amendments for extensions to the shipping season at Cominco's Polaris Mine and Breakwater Resource's Nanisivik Mine.  We wrote the marine component of the EIS for Falconbridge's Raglan Mine in northern Quebec .  Enfotec also led the marine component of the EIS for the Izok base metal development in Coronation Gulf as well as the initial scoping for coal developments in Alaska .

Enfotec is very experienced in the Environmental Assessment and Review Process (EARP).  We are the most experienced Company at leading a client through an EARP that relates to a development requiring marine navigation through ice covered waters.  We can carry your company through all stages for the EARP process for a marine development as follows:

·        Initial Environmental Screening for the identification of Valued Ecosystem Components (VEC)

·        The development of the Level 1 interaction Matrix

·        The Initial Environmental Evaluation

·        Environmental Impact Statement

·        Public Review

We have worked extensively with northern communities over the years to help our clients develop mitigating measures to limit the impact of marine shipping on the human and natural environment.  Such methods as ice bridge building, ship routing and scheduling modifications have all been used successfully to allow marine developments to coexist with fragile marine environments.  Enfotec is a world expert in the ability to define the impacts of shipping operations in ice covered waters and the development and implementation of mitigating measures to protect the marine environment.

Field investigation of sea ice properties is an important part of the work undertaken for our clients by Enfotec.

Training

Training is an important part of the services provided by Enfotec Technical Services.  In addition to hands-on training, we also offer two tools to assist our clients in gaining knowledge and experience in the field of ice and ice navigation.  These tools are the Ice Navigation Training Aids Module (TAM) and the Ice Navigation Simulator.

The Ice Navigation Simulator is a tool to teach navigating officers the process of integrating ice information into passage planning and ship navigation in ice covered waters.

The Training Aids Module (TAM) provides background information on sea ice as a module within IceNav.

Enfotec has extensive experience organizing public meetings in northern communities for government agencies and shipping companies explaining the impact of development activities on their sea ice.
